Prof. A A Mamun, Professor of Physics, Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka, Bangladesh was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 31 December 1966. He completed his B. Sc. (Hons.) and M. Sc. (Thesis) in physics from Jahangirnagar University, and secured first class first position in both the B. Sc. (Hons.) and M. Sc. (Thesis) Examinations. He successfully completed his Ph. D. in plasma physics from the University of St Andrews (UK) under a very prestigious scholarship, Commonwealth Scholarship that he was awarded (by an international open competition) by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (UK). His Ph. D. thesis was mainly concerned with nonlinear structures in both space and laboratory plasmas. One part of his Ph. D. thesis mainly presented the theoretical prediction of the existence of density cavitons (new nonlinear phenomena) observed by the Freja Satellite and Viking Spacecraft, and the other part of it presented highly nonlinear dust-acoustic waves in dusty plasmas, which are relevant to space as well as laboratory dusty plasmas. The results of his Ph. D. research works (published in some prestigious international journals) had made Dr. Mamun very well-known to the plasma physics community very quickly.

Prof. Mamun, for his outstanding contribution in dusty plasma physics, was awarded a number of very prestigious post-doctoral fellowship (by international open competition), e. g. Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship by the AvH Foundation (Germany), Commonwealth Post-doctoral Research Fellowship by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (UK), the Max Planck Research Fellowship by the Max Plank Institute (Germany), etc. to carry out the advanced research in dusty or complex plasma physics in Germany, UK, etc. He has also been appointed the Regular Associate of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (Trieste, Italy) twice to update his scientific knowledge by making scientific visits to this Centre time to time.

Prof. Mamun has made a substantial contribution towards the published literature of theoretical plasma physics. He has published 279 research articles in international journals, 8 research articles in international conference proceedings published by the American Institute of Physics, and 5 research articles in edited books published by some multinational publishers. He is a coauthor of the first book on dusty or complex plasma physics, published by the Institute of Physics (London). This book is now used not only as one of the most important reference books, but also as a textbook for a post-graduate course in many universities all over the world. He has attracted the attention of all most all the plasma physicists (working in complex or dusty plasmas) not only by this first book written on complex or dusty plasma physics, but also by his many research articles which are highly cited. The output of the Google Scholar search (made on 31-3-2014) shows that the works of Prof. Mamun already received 5927 citations with h-index 34 and i10-index 102 (for the updated citation indices of his works, please visit:: http://scholar.google.com/citations?user=uOLQ_SkAAAAJ&hl=en) . Thus, Prof. Mamun has made crucial contributions to advancing the new research field of dusty or complex plasma physics.

Prof. Mamun has been awarded a number of national and international awards/prizes in recognition of his excellent research works in plasma physics and of his outstanding contribution to the general progress in physical sciences and related technology in Bangladesh through his research and teaching. The most important of these awards/prizes are (for examples): i) Bessel Research Award-2009 by the AvH foundation (Germany) in recognition of his past accomplishment of research and teaching; ii) Third World Academy of Science (TWAS) Young Physicist Prize-2006 by the TWAS (Trieste, Italy) in recognition of his great contribution in physics; iii) Two Gold Medals (one in junior group and other in senior group of scientists working in physical sciences) by the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (Bangladesh) for his excellent research works and great contribution to general progress of science and technology in Bangladesh; iv) Best Young Physicist Prize-2000 by the ITCPP (Trieste, Italy) in recognition of his pioneering contribution to the study of nonlinear phenomena in complex plasmas; v) Bangladesh University Grants Commission Prize-2008 for the best research article in physical sciences in 2008. . Prof. Mamun presented invited talks or chaired scientific sessions or worked as a member of the Organizing Committee or International Advisory Board in many international plasma physics conferences held in different western countries (viz. Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Greece, Portugal, etc.). He is now leading a very strong and active/productive plasma physics research group (consisting of a large number university/collage teachers and MSc./MPhil./PhD research students) in his own country Bangladesh, though he lives and works in a less developed country like Bangladesh, he has direct collaboration with different well-known plasma physicists in different parts [viz. UK (Oxford, Cambridge and Scotland), Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Georgia, Portugal, Venezuela, Egypt, Iran, Pakistan, India, etc.] of the globe. Recognizing his scientific excellence, the editors of numerous international prestigious journals [e.g. Physical Review Letters (USA), Geophysical Research Letters (USA), Physics of Plasmas (UK), Journal of Plasma Physics (UK), Europhysics Letters (European Union), Physics Letters A (Netherlands), New Journal of Physics (UK), Physica Scripta (Sweden), IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science (USA), etc.] have appointed him the regular reviewer for their journals. Prof. Mamun was also appointed the Guest Editor of a special issue of the Journal of Plasma Physics published by the Cambridge University Press (UK). He is the Editor of Jahangirnagar University Journal of Physics (Dhaka, Bangladesh) and an Editorial Board Member of the African Journal of Mathematics and Computer Science Research published by Academic Journals (Nigeria).

Prof. Mamun, because of his excellent academic background and extra-ordinary research/teaching experiences, was offered many attractive permanent positions by many research institutes or universities of western countries like Germany, UK, USA, etc. But he declined to have those permanent positions because of his firm commitment or strong determination to serve his own country (Bangladesh), and because of his deep love for his students, his university campus, and his own country where he has been grown up.
